NOTICE OF INTENT TO SOLE SOURCE: The Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (EFLHD) of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), intends to enter into a contract with Geometrics, Inc., for the purchase of a GEODE-24, seismic data acquisition system. The system will be used to collect seismic refraction, reflection, or surface waves. The data is modeled and interpreted using software to show soil and rock subsurface composition based on shear and compressional-wave seismic velocities recorded within a stratum. The only known supplier is Geometrics, Inc. The device will be used to delineate subsurface conditions on projects that are difficult to access or environmentally sensitive to disturbance when drill rigs are used, in cases where drilling team/equipment are not available, to support drilling or any other situations that will require the use of the system. The EFLHD Geotechnical Engineers have rented a similar system in the past to complete the required geotechnical evaluation on many projects. The Federal Lands Offices also currently use specific software to process the data acquired. This software requires that the data be acquired in SEG2 format. There are no other known systems that collect data in this format. Other similar systems exist on the market, but there are none known to support the required processing software.
