The Cabin Safety Research Team requires a new AFRL fire trainer to provide a safe and realistic laboratory to simulate different types of aircraft cabin fires to allow members of the cabin crew (as opposed to firefighters) to practice fire suppression within the aircraft. Research participants will be able to experience a variety of aircraft fires. Research in this laboratory will address human factor elements of fighting a fire inside of an aircraft cabin, such as the usability of new techniques and technology. This will also provide updated training in the use of aircraft cabin fire-fighting equipment and systems, and allow researchers to compare various Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) fire-training aides. The system will be installed at CAMI, located on the FAA Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The AFRL will replace the existing firefighting research laboratory, which was installed in 1997. This laboratory would also aid in yearly Cabin Safety Workshops where participants have a hands-on experience with a cabin fire and are versed in the current procedures and latest research.
