The nuts are classified as commercial items and must conform to the latest revision of the governing part standard; prior revisions are acceptable only for previously manufactured hardware. Inspection and acceptance occur at origin with zero non-conformances required in the sample lot under MIL-STD-1916 or an equivalent zero-based sampling plan, and dimensional compliance for threads must follow System 22 of FED-STD-H28/20, excluding very small internal and external threads. Mercury and mercury-containing compounds are strictly prohibited except for specific functional uses in batteries, instruments, sensors, controls, weapon systems, or chemical reagents designated by NAVSEA, and any portable mercury-containing devices must include a secondary containment and be shockproof per NAVSEA 5100-003D.
