Title: Offsite Storage of Deidentified Cell Lines 2. Background Information: The mission of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is to support and conduct research on the impact of alcohol use on human health and well-being. NIAAA supports a wide range of medical research through grants to universities and other medical research institutions across the country. The Institute also supports government scientists who conduct basic, translational, and clinical research across a broad spectrum of research topics using state of the art methodologies. The Laboratory of Neurogenetics has produced cell lines from human samples for genetic research over the course of 37 years. These samples are very valuable and need to be protected by storage at liquid nitrogen temperatures (i.e., in cryofreezers). To avoid the possible loss of these valuable samples due to an onsite cryofreezer failure, replicate vials of cells are stored off-site in a cryofreezer facility. The offsite cryofreezer facility must be within a 35-mile radius from the NIH laboratory site to allow for retrieval of stored samples or deposition of additional samples during the year. 4.
