Strict prohibitions are in place against the use of ozone-depleting substances in any phase of manufacturing or testing unless explicitly approved in writing by the contracting officer. Mercury and mercury-containing compounds are also banned from direct contact with the item except under narrowly defined exceptions for batteries, sensors, weapons systems, and specific reagents as outlined by NAVSEA.
