Palomar Ranger District Observatory Campground Forest Health Project (Project)

The Project aims to enhance wildfire resilience and improve forest health across approximately 24 acres surrounding the Observatory Campground in California through targeted forest treatments focused on reducing hazardous fuel loads. Activities include mechanical and manual thinning of small-diameter trees, pruning, chipping, biomass removal, and the application of mulch and soil amendments to suppress undergrowth and promote healthier stand conditions. The work is designed to eliminate ladder and surface fuels, encourage the growth of mature mixed-conifer forest with shade-intolerant species, and improve overall ecosystem vigor without expanding or altering existing campground infrastructure. No new roads, facilities, or increased use of the campground are planned. All work will adhere to established forest management practices that prioritize the protection of biological, cultural, and water resources. The project is being managed by the Resource Conservation District, Greater San Diego, with oversight from Heather Cady, Director of Forestry and Wildfire Resilience Programs. Though the solicitation is currently listed as a forecast with no formal solicitation number or set-aside details, the effort aligns with broader regional goals of reducing wildfire risk and restoring forest structure in fire-adapted landscapes. The project site is located in California and all activities will be conducted using low-impact methods to ensure environmental integrity is maintained throughout implementation.
