The project funded under the Projects of National Significance aims to advance health equity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families by promoting full participation in community life and influencing national and state policies that support self-determination, independence, productivity, and inclusion. Led by the Administration for Community Living within the Department of Health and Human Services, the initiative seeks to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to actively shape systems and policies that affect their lives. It will foster leadership development, increase understanding of available supports, and drive systemic change through advocacy and collaboration with advocates, guardians, and communities. The project will track progress through four core outcomes: changes in policies that improve experiences for people with disabilities, growth in leadership roles among individuals and families, increased knowledge about supports needed to achieve desired life outcomes, and enhanced access to data resources. To measure success, it will count the number of policy advocacy participants, trainings delivered, policy products created and disseminated, leadership tools developed and shared, and the percentage of participants reporting new leadership skills or increased knowledge. Additional metrics include trainings and resources distributed and data resources created and made accessible. All activities will be implemented with direct involvement from people with disabilities and their families, ensuring that efforts are grounded in lived experience and aimed at sustainable, equitable impact.
