Full Description

USNS Waters (TAGS-45) is an MSC Navigation Test Support Ship. USNS WATERS was originally an oceanographic survey ship, built by the Avondale Shipyard and delivered to the US Navy in 1993. Under the sponsorship of the Strategic Systems Program Office, Waters was converted in 1998 by Detyens Shipyard to support submarine navigation system testing and ballistic missile flight test support services. The vessel is operated by the US Navy - Military Sealift Command (MSC). The vessel has a diesel-electric drive, twin shafts, 7,400 shaft horsepower with a centralized automation and propulsion system. The automation system was updated in 2010 by Beach Panel due to obsolescence issues. The electrical load management system and the propulsion SCR drives are obsolete and supportability is becoming an issue. Military Sealift Command intends to replace the electrical load management system and the propulsion system with new technology. The intent of the replacement is to keep the same basic form, fit and function of the existing Propulsion and Electrical Systems. The new system shall be supportable for a minimum of 15 years and must meet the entire requirement for the ABS SVR 2010 in order to maintain its ACCU certification.
