Small Craft Harbour and Port Analysis – Canadian Waterways

Objectives of the project: In order to prioritize survey efforts, the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) would like to better understand the small craft harbours and ports within navigable Canadian Waterways. The goal of the contract is to identify and locate all small craft harbours and ports in Canada, analyze the ship count, type of ship, draught and potentially analyze where the ships are travelling to/from. Step one will be to contact Port Authorities / Harbour Masters to identify location and indicate a number of ships that travel to the port. Step two of the contract would be to get the ship locations using AIS data, followed by investigating new technologies to help identify locations. Step three would be to validate the data with an approach using technology and multiple resources, such as remote sensing data. For the first contract CHS would like to start with the area proposed in figure 1.2.
