Tom Lantos Tunnel Fire Department Communication Device Replacement DDO (EA 04-4X150)

Caltrans proposes replacing the existing fire department communication devices in the Tom Lantos Tunnel and Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC) located on Highway 1 from post mile 38.0 to 40.4. The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has identified deficiencies in Fire Department communication and radio coverage. The Tom Lantos Tunnel (Devil’s Slide Tunnel) consists of twin 30-foot-wide horseshoe-shaped bores, each approximately 4,300 feet in length. Each bore is classified as “Category D” under the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 502 standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways. The old equipment is non-supported very high frequency (VHF) radio equipment and must be upgraded. The project will replace existing Radio Frequency (RF) emitting ultra-high frequency/very high frequency (UHF/VHF) devices inside the tunnel, OMC, equipment chambers, and cross passages to provide Fire Department communications supported radio coverage. Traffic control will be required during construction activities.
