The U.S. Department of Commerce, through NOAA, intends to negotiate a sole source contract with DB Control for the repair of a G-IV Aircraft Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier located at MacDill AFB, Florida. This component is critical to the Tail Doppler radar used by the National Weather Service and Hurricane Research Division for hurricane surveillance. DB Control is identified as the only viable source for these repairs because they hold the proprietary patents, copyrights, and schematics for the equipment, and possess the specialized testing tools required for troubleshooting. Failure to repair this unit, which is NOAA's only spare, could jeopardize essential research and surveillance capabilities, while a full system replacement would cost over 200,000 dollars. Although this is a sole source intent, the agency issued a sources sought notice allowing other firms five days to provide documentation proving they can perform the work. All potential contractors must be registered with the System for Award Management to be eligible for an award.
