Volcano Hills Community Fuel Break

This project will construct a community fuel break on prominent ridges in the vicinity of the community of Volcano, located in central Amador County. The shaded fuel break will extend from Pioneer to Volcano. The fuel break is a total of 7.5 miles ranging from 150'-400' wide depending on terrain. Using an average of 300' width, the estimated acreage is 270 acres. This fuel break would provide protection for approximately 2,065 habitable structures. This proposed fuel break will lie in strategically with the recently established Mitchell Mine Fuel Break (17- FP-AEU-1027) and the current fuel reduction program by the AFSC on BLM parcels funded by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC #1370). The project will utilize a combination of treatments to reduce or remove incompatible vegetation within the fuel break. These treatments may include mechanical mastication, hand thinning and chipping, piling and burning, pruning, the application of herbicides, grazing, and/or other treatment methods. Ground fuels and brush will be masticated, and small conifer and hardwood trees will be thinned. Property owners included in the project have signed Right-of-Entry agreements to allow project work to be performed on their properties. The project has been flagged on the ground with flagging.
