The Willamette Valley Project (WVP) 2026 initiative focuses on natural resource management education and training designed to develop botanically sophisticated restoration workers. This program supports the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Portland District's environmental stewardship goals by engaging young professionals, veterans, displaced workers, college students, and local community members in native landscape and wildlife habitat restoration. It also offers primary and secondary school students opportunities to participate in producing and installing native plant materials, fostering environmental awareness and stewardship on USACE lands. The majority of activities are centered around the southern lakes within the Willamette Valley Project, including Fern Ridge, Fall Creek, Dexter, Lookout Point, Hills Creek, Cottage Grove, and Dorena, with limited time expected at northern sites like Cougar, Foster-Greenpeter, or Detroit-Big Cliff. The scope of work involves hands-on education and restoration projects including land stewardship, wildlife habitat improvement, riparian and wetland enhancement, native grassland management, plant propagation and greenhouse operations, fisheries habitat management, and park and recreation improvements. Outreach activities will also be a critical component, providing public education and interpretive services to enhance community involvement and environmental understanding. The solicitation was posted in late March 2026, with proposals due by late May, and is managed under the USACE Portland District, Department of Defense, with Melanie A. Barrett serving as the point of contact.
