The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute plans to extend the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) Field Centers through a limited competition among the current 40 active field center contracts. These centers have been instrumental in the recruitment, examination, and follow-up of over 161,000 women participating in a large clinical trial and observational study focused on cardiovascular disease risks in older women of diverse backgrounds. The extension will consolidate the existing field centers into a smaller number—approximately four to six regional centers—resulting in more streamlined management, enhanced coordination of regional activities, clinical outcomes documentation, and support for ancillary studies and investigator training. This consolidation will be effective around September 30, 2010, and will continue the study's efforts in morbidity and mortality follow-up, comprehensive data analysis, and scientific publications utilizing the extensive WHI data. The restructuring aims to reduce redundancy and delays inherent in managing numerous separate centers. The study's objectives remain centered on understanding risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and related conditions in older women. The continuation involves maintaining rigorous data management, quality control, laboratory coordination, and ongoing monitoring systems through the WHI Coordinating Center. Subcontracting opportunities are expected during the contract term, particularly for laboratory work. Interested institutions may submit detailed capability statements to NHLBI for consideration. The contract management and point of contact are based in Bethesda, MD, with Peggy D. Mills serving as the Contracting Officer and Paul C. McFarlane as Chief of the PPS Branch.

The four Regional Center contractors shall take advantage of the large Women's Health Initiative (WHI) cohort to launch the next generation of critically important cardiovascular research projects that target older women and will study several important phenotypes in African American, Hispanic, and White women: heart failure, atrial fibrillation, VTE, coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and stroke. To achieve these objectives, the renewal will continue full outcomes ascertainment and adjudication in two important sub-cohorts: hormone trial participants, and African American and Hispanic women. Self-reported outcomes data will be collected in the remaining cohort to serve as a platform for ancillary studies and a new generation of clinical trials. The rich resources of data and specimens will be made widely available to the investigator community and for training young investigators. The study structure will be streamlined into four Regional Centers (RCs) and a Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), which will function in part as an additional Regional Center.
