This contract involves a reclamation project aimed at mitigating environmental risks associated with contaminants near the Morning Glory Tailings, Sirius, and Cracker Mines located on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in Jefferson County, Montana. The primary goals are to reduce human and environmental exposure to hazardous mine wastes, limit contaminant mobility, and protect local surface water and groundwater. The scope of work includes extensive earthwork and environmental remediation tasks such as constructing and improving roads, excavating and transporting approximately 18,000 cubic yards of waste to a repository near the former Basin Creek Mine, backfilling excavated areas, installing culverts, disposing of debris, and implementing erosion control measures like French drains, diversion ditches, grading, and vegetation restoration. The sites lie at high elevations between 7,200 and 8,200 feet and are accessible via specified Forest Service roads from Basin, Montana. Handling of the mine waste requires compliance with regulations under CERCLA due to the presence of hazardous metals. A pre-bid tour was scheduled to familiarize prospective bidders with site conditions, emphasizing the need for all-terrain vehicles to navigate difficult terrain. The estimated contract value ranges from $500,000 to $1,000,000, and the solicitation was expected to be available for download starting February 2008. The contract specialist overseeing this opportunity is based in Bozeman, Montana, under the Department of Agriculture’s Custer Gallatin National Forest office.
