What does Shoshone National Forest do?

The Shoshone National Forest, operating under the U.S. Forest Service within the Department of Agriculture, is tasked with sustaining the ecological integrity of one of America’s oldest national forests while supporting public access, resource conservation, and infrastructure resilience. Its core mission centers on managing forested landscapes through integrated resource stewardship, including wildlife habitat protection, trail and road maintenance, water system integrity, and cultural heritage preservation. Strategic priorities include maintaining critical transportation corridors, ensuring sanitary waste and septic systems function in remote ranger stations, and conducting ecological monitoring to inform adaptive management practices. Programs emphasize fire resilience, invasive species control, and equitable public use, all underpinned by science-based decision-making and community engagement. Procurement patterns reveal a strong reliance on specialty trade contractors for infrastructure repair and site preparation, particularly in highway, bridge, and ranger station maintenance. The agency frequently utilizes indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contracts for professional services, especially environmental and heritage-related consulting, enabling flexible, long-term engagement with qualified vendors. Solid waste collection, septic tank services, and janitorial support are procured to sustain operational continuity in isolated field locations, reflecting a focus on mission-critical utilities in undeveloped terrain. The agency prioritizes professional, scientific, and technical services—particularly environmental consulting, stocking surveys, and heritage documentation—while consistently awarding contracts through Small Business Administration (SBA) set-asides. This pattern signals a deliberate commitment to fostering local and specialized small business participation, especially among firms with expertise in forestry support, ecological assessment, and rural infrastructure. Vendor relationships are built on technical proficiency, geographic familiarity, and proven capacity for remote-site execution. Organized under the Forest Service, the Shoshone National Forest manages over two million acres of federal land across northwestern Wyoming. It operates through ranger districts and field offices, relying on IDIQs, task orders, and competitive solicitations to acquire services that maintain ecological, recreational, and infrastructural functions across a vast, roadless landscape.
