Full Description

The 10x10 Supersonic Wind Tunnel (SWT) is located in building 85 at the GRC in Cleveland, Ohio. The wind tunnel is managed by the NASA Glenn Resaerch Center Facilities Management Division, and operated by the NASA Glenn Research Testing Division. The 10x10 SWT is NASA's only high speed (Mach>2.0) propulsion wind tunnel. It is capable of attaining test section flow in the Mach number range 2.0 to 3.5. It can be run in either an aerodynamic cycle (closed loop) with a dynamic pressure range from 20 - 720 psf and total temperature range of 540 - 740 R, or a propulsion cycle (open loop) with a dynamic pressure range of 500 - 600 psf and a total temperature range of 520 - 1440 R. The tunnel is operated in propulsion cycle when models are being tested that introduce contaminants or potentially dangerous gases into the airstream (e.g., engine or model exhaust), however, and/or when the tunnel air heater is utilized, the tunnel is operated on the propulsion cycle (open loop). In this arrangement the tunnel is operated as an open system with air continuously drawn through the air dryer and exhausted through the atmosphere. The full Mach number range can be achieved in either cycle. The facility has also been shown to be capable of being safely and accurately operated in the Mach range from 0 to 0.36. The cross section at the test section entrance is 10 ft. high by 10 ft. wide. The test section is 40 ft. in length. Expansion Joint #2 is a stainless steel bellows installed in the tunnel air circuit to allow for movement of the tunnel shell caused by thermal expansion and vibrations during tunnel operation. The joint is downstream of the test section in a subsonic region of the tunnel circuit. The joint is upstream of Cooler #1 that cools the air entering Compressor #1. A listing of specifications are attached, GRC is currently working to validate and refine the specifications, specifically the movements and fluctuations of the tunnel that the joint is experiencing during tunnel operation. Intent to Sole Source - Lunar Exploration Ground Sites (LEGS) Public Private Partnership (PPP)
Solicitation # 80GRC027R0003
NASA Glenn Research Center intends to award a sole source contract to KSAT Inc. under FAR 6.103-1 and FAR Part 12 to establish the Lunar Exploration Ground Sites (LEGS) through a Public Private Partnership. This initiative aims to develop a global network of ground stations providing high-availability, direct-to-Earth communications and navigation for NASA's Artemis and Moonbase initiatives. The network will support spacecraft operating between 36,000 kilometers and 2 million kilometers from Earth using X-band and Ka-band frequencies. The project involves integrating two NASA-provided 20-meter antennas and establishing at least four additional sites to ensure full redundancy. The contract has a period of performance of five years from award, with a phased operational rollout requiring three operational sites by October 15, 2027, six antennas for full redundancy by October 15, 2028, and an enhanced configuration of nine antennas by October 2029. The contractor must adhere to strict technical standards, including SCaN-SRD Revision 7 and International Communication System Interoperability Standards, while maintaining an Integrated Master Schedule. Security requirements are rigorous, necessitating compliance with NIST SP 800-171 for Controlled Unclassified Information and obtaining an Authorization to Operate for systems within the NASA environment. Acceptance of deliverables is subject to NASA's written approval following Factory and Site Acceptance Testing.
