LOAD CELL AND READOUT BOX SPECIFICATIONS For Lockport Lock The Army Corps of Engineers is seeking bids for a long term instrumentation system to monitor cable loads at the Lockport Lock located in Lockport, IL. Two (2) identical systems will be installed into the 2 identical guard towers on either side of the upper service gate of the lock. Each of the two systems will consist of seven identical load cells and one readout box to be used by Army Corps Personnel during routine maintenance of the lift mechanism and cables. The system will be expected to run for longer than the ten to fifteen year life span of the cables. Historically, the gate is cycled approximately twelve (12) times per day. The fatigue life of the load cell is to be greater than 10,000,000 cycles. Each load cell is expected to experience a tension load of approximately 35,000 pounds during the normal operation of the gate. During cable installation and tensioning, loads as high as 50,000 pounds were observed in individual cables. A load cell should be chosen to withstand 75,000 lbs. maximum working load with a breaking load greater than 200,000 lbs. The Army Corps plans to implement a maintenance plan to minimize the uneven loading of the cables by utilizing the load cells and readout to rebalance the cables on a regular basis. The cables are tensioned by a turnbuckle mechanism detailed in the attached drawing. A 17-4PH stainless steel clevis pin load cell, 2.75inches diameter is to be used. The pin MK-20/7-6 in the attached drawing will be replaced by the clevis pin load cell. Each individual load cell pin will have a retainer/keeper. The system will be placed into identical guard towers on either side of the lock. Historically, the towers are heated in the winter and temperatures inside of the towers do not fall below 50degreesF. The operating temperature of the system is to be between -65degrees and 250degreesF. There is no humidity control in the guard towers. Electronics enclosures should meet NEMA 4 or similar as condensing moisture, falling dirt and dust as well as grease from the cable system will all be present in the installation environment. All electrical connections are to be waterproof. Each load cell electrical cable shall be run to a junction box on the back wall approximately 22inches away from the ends of the existing pins; the cables will then be run in conduit along the back wall for an approximate length of 10.5feet to the readout unit. A site visit can be scheduled with the POC to confirm measurements and installation conditions. The system will be plugged or hard wired into a standard 120 V AC outlet and include an on/off switch. The distance from the anticipated location of the readout box to the nearest receptacle is approximately 15 feet. The system should return to an operable/ useable state after an on-off cycle or loss of power. The complete system is to be installed by the bidder to include start up, calibration, and prestressing. Training on system operation for Corps' employees is to be included in the bid cost. The bid should include information on the manufacturer and model of the load cells and the display/readout box to be provided. The bid should also include the proposed method of configuring the system (hard wired or with plugs between load cells and readout) and the proposed method of acquiring the individual load cell readouts. Delivery Date: 80 days after contract award Delivery Address: Lockport Lock 2502 Channel Drive Lockport, IL 60441-4199 POC Doug Ver Cautren +1 (555) 000-0000 EX# 206
