The Southern Regional Contracting Office at Brooke Army Medical Center awarded a sole source, firm fixed price purchase order to ScentAir for the procurement of a custom scent simulator system. This equipment is designed to integrate specifically with the CAREN virtual reality system used by the San Antonio Military Medical Center for the clinical research, assessment, and treatment of injured service members. The addition of the scent simulator aims to enhance the realism of virtual scenes to better challenge and assess patients during their rehabilitation process. This procurement was conducted without full and open competition under the authority of 10 USC 2304(c) and FAR 13.106-1(b)(1), as ScentAir is the sole manufacturer of the system compatible with the existing CAREN technology. The action was processed as a simplified acquisition under the Test Program for Certain Commercial Items. The contract, identified by solicitation number W81K0012T0183, was certified by Contracting Officer Melissa Oliva on June 20, 2012.
