The U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA), supporting the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), is requesting information for a portable, airworthy digital imaging device intended for far-forward battlefield medical care. This device, primarily an electrical ultrasound with digital imaging capabilities, is expected to support multiple diagnostic functions including Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST), pneumothorax and long bone fracture identification, determination of intrauterine pregnancy via transabdominal imaging, intracranial pressure monitoring through optic nerve measurement, and cardiac assessment for tamponade or asystole. Additional requirements include built-in wireless or satellite transmission capability suitable for Role-I medical units, rugged construction for harsh deployed environments, lightweight design, and a compact form factor. This Request for Information (RFI) seeks whitepapers from interested firms that describe such devices and their clinical applications, focusing on possible test and evaluation studies. The information gathered will inform the potential future competitive procurement process. Responses are due by December 6, 2012, and all inquiries are to be directed to the designated contact. This six-month activity aims to identify technologies that could significantly enhance medical capabilities in combat settings, ultimately improving survival and care for wounded soldiers.
