The machining center must be capable of automated production of pre-polished optical surfaces in glass ready for final polishing without any intermediate surface fining process. This class of machine incorporates a massive frame, high precision spindles, high resolution position feedback, and special diamond grinding wheels, to produce a deterministic micro grinding action that generates a surface that will be sufficiently smooth, accurate, and free of subsurface damage, that it can be efficiently polished using normal final optical polishing processes. The machining center shall have a dedicated CNC controller with manufacturing applications facilitates the production and execution of multiaxis machining programs for the generation of spherical optical surfaces, aspherical optical surfaces, and other optical features, such as bevels, edges, and sag flats. In addition the CNC controller must interface with standard CAM programs such as MasterCAM to allow 5 axis profiling. The machine stiffness, machine geometry, and spindle power shall be sufficient to generate lens surfaces up to 12 inches in diameter. The following specifications are a random sampling and not all inclusive of the requirement. 1) Axes configuration must have 5 controllable travel axes (X, Y, Z, B, C) if which all five can be in simultaneous CNC controlled. 2) CNC Controller- the machine must have a CNC controller that provides simultaneous programmed motion of all 5 axes.3) Performance The machine must be able to generate pre-polished optical surfaces that meet the following requirements. Fused silica part 50 mm diameter, 200 mm convex of curvature. .a <0.5 micron peak to valley irregularity .b < 2500 angstrom RMS roughness 4) Grinding Spindle, 5) Work Spindle, 6) Power requirements 460 volts, 3 phase, 7) Coolant system, 8) Miscellaneous must be supplied with operation and maintenance manuals, 1 year warranty and support package.
