The Program Contracting Office East plans to negotiate a sole source contract with Bruker Biospin Corporation to upgrade the existing Skyscan 1176 High Resolution In Vivo Micro-CT System. The upgrade includes procuring components that are fully compatible with the current system and software, such as a continuous variable X-ray source, an 11 Megapixel cooled digital X-ray CCD camera, and a 6-position automatic filter changer with highly purified filters. Key scanner capabilities include resolutions ranging from 9 to 35 microns, scanning diameters of 35 to 68 mm, and scanning lengths up to 200 mm with automatic connection of multiple scans. The system ensures radiation safety with exposure below 1 microSv/hour at the instrument surface. Accompanying physiological monitoring subsystems support real-time animal monitoring and synchronization with breathing and heart rate, along with appropriately sized carbon composite beds for various animals, including mice, rats, and rabbits. The computer hardware required to operate this upgraded system is a high-performance Dell workstation equipped with a quad-core Intel XEON processor, 128 GB of RAM, 4TB RAID storage, and a 2GB NVIDIA graphics card, running Windows 7 or higher. Essential software packages include GPU-accelerated and hierarchical reconstruction programs for rapid and accurate data processing, visualization tools allowing flexible 2D and 3D rendering, and format converters including DICOM compatibility for image file management. Functional analysis software supports detailed morphometric evaluation, while multiple visualization applications enhance 3D model interaction and presentation. Interested vendors with compatible equipment were invited to express interest by a specified deadline, after which the contracting officer would decide on proceeding with a competitive process or sole source negotiation with Bruker Biospin Corporation.
