The Department of Defense, through the Navsup Weapon Systems Support Mech, has issued an award for the procurement of a Sensors Unlimited SU640KTSX InGaAs Near Infrared camera. This specialized equipment will be integrated into the Spacecraft Research and Design Center's High Energy Laser Testbed to serve as a fine track sensor. The camera is essential for acquiring NIR image frames to control the Fast Steering Mirror, ensuring precision pointing and target tracking of the High Energy Laser beam. This development is a critical step for future Navy directed energy systems, specifically for testing performance in adverse conditions such as deep turbulence, maritime environments, and platform vibrations. The selected KTSX camera is a commercial item featuring a 640 x 512 pixel resolution with a 25 micron pixel pitch, operating in the short wave infrared spectrum between 0.9 and 1.7 microns. Key technical specifications include simultaneous RS-170 analog and Camera Link 14-bit digital output, anti-blooming protection, and an automatic gain control algorithm for non-uniformity correction. Due to these specific technical requirements and the necessity for these exact features, the agency utilized a brand name description to preclude other manufacturers. The contract is identified by solicitation number N0010410QQT54 and falls under NAICS code 333315.

Full Description

This camera will be implemented in the Spacecraft Research and Design Center's High Energy Laser Tested. The camera will operate as a Near Infrared (NIR) fine track sensor. It will acquire NIR image frames that will be used to control the Fast Steering Mirror (FSM) for fine target tracking and precision pointing of the High Energy Laser (HEL) beam. HEL beam control is a critical development step necessary for future Navy implementation of HEL directed energy systems. The current step is to test HEL systems in increasingly realistic (and adverse) environments. Adverse environmental factors include deep turbulence, the maritime environment, and platform induced vibration environments. The Sensors Unlimited SU640KTSX (KTSX) camera combines numerous features not found in competitive cameras. The KTSX is a 640 x 512 pixel (25 micron pixel pitch) InGaAs camera with simultaneous RS-170 analog and Camera Link 14-bit digital output. The camera operates at room temperature in Short Wave Infrared between 0.9 and 1.7 μm. It has anti-blooming protection, an external trigger (3 modes), 12 preset exposure settings (from 0.06 to 33.2 ms) with ability to toggle on/off corrections at each setting. The KTSX is compact with no dimension greater than 2.6" and operates an automatic gain control (AGC) algorithm that is able to select the correct non-uniformity correction (NUC) table based on scene content. The use of a brand name description in this acquisition is essential to the agency's requirements, thereby precluding consideration of a product manufactured by another company. The required products are commercial items that have been sold, leased, or licensed to the general public.
