The U.S. Customs Service, Office of Information and Technology, is issuing a Request for Information to solicit white papers on innovative concepts for smart and secure containers and supporting infrastructure. The primary objective is to enhance the security and integrity of cargo containers within the international trade system upon their arrival at United States ports of entry. Areas of interest include off-the-shelf security improvements, intrusion detection systems, embedded technologies for detecting contraband such as explosives or chemical agents, and the necessary power and communication infrastructures to support these systems. Interested parties from industry, academia, state and local governments, or consortia must submit a white paper not exceeding five pages, accompanied by a cover letter detailing the concept and potential payoffs. Submissions must categorize the proposed technology into one of four deployment timelines ranging from immediate to over twenty-four months and must discuss implementation practicality, costs, and operational impact. The deadline for responses is August 5, 2002. This is an investigative request for information and does not constitute a request for proposal or a commitment of government funding.
