The Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, is a 388-building facility established in 1832. The James Neckers Building 0063 (S0031, S0032, S0033) is a 186,318 square foot, 6-story building established in 1963.
The scope of work provides for the complete modernization of two existing traction elevators. Elevator #1 is a five-stop, 4,000-pound traction elevator with basement-mounted equipment serving front and rear entrances. Elevator #2 is a four-stop, 2,000-pound traction elevator with a machine room in the penthouse. The work shall include complete modernization of both elevators and their machine rooms to bring the systems into compliance with the current elevator code issued by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Elevator Safety Division. The project shall include all required structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, fire alarm, communication, accessibility, and code compliance modifications necessary to support the elevator modernization work. The modifications may include work to the building's electrical service, ventilation, and adjacent building components impacted by construction. Non-proprietary elevator equipment shall be used wherever possible. The A/E team shall include an elevator consultant with experience in elevator modernization and replacement projects. Hazardous materials may be encountered. The A/E shall assess the project for eligibility under applicable utility incentive programs, energy grants, rebates, and other funding opportunities. The A/E shall identify all qualifying programs and shall prepare, coordinate, and submit all required applications, calculations, supporting documentation, and related materials necessary to obtain available incentives for the project. The A/E is encouraged to include independent cost estimators on their teams to verify estimates are in line with current market conditions to avoid project bids that exceed the available funding for the project. The A/E estimates should be updated and verified at each stage of the project in accordance with the Design and Construction Manual. Designers are reminded that their Professional Services Agreements make them responsible for providing a design that is within budget, and they can be held responsible for redesigning the project should the bids received exceed project funding. If applicable, the design will need to comply with the Illinois Stretch Energy Code.
