Sandia National Laboratories has developed an innovative material, SD-7041, capable of selectively separating branched and linear polar organic molecules from bulk liquid mixtures. This technology enables reversible separations at room temperature with minimal energy input, as the sorbed molecules can be released spontaneously or with mild heating below 50°C. The material effectively separates pairs such as linear from branched alcohols, short chain from long chain alcohols, and alcohols from water, and is also effective for tetrahydrofuran, amines, and cyclohexane. The recovered species can be condensed and collected in liquid form for reuse or disposal, making the process efficient and environmentally friendly. This technology has promising applications across various industries including petrochemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and industrial effluent treatment, where precise molecular separations are critical. Interested parties seeking further details or collaboration opportunities are encouraged to contact Sandia National Laboratories by the specified deadline. The material’s low energy requirements, rapid desorption, and broad applicability position it as a valuable solution for industrial molecular separation challenges.

Full Description

Separation of Branched Versus Linear Polar Organic Molecules - Technology Transfer Opportunity Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico has developed a new class of material (SD-7041) that can perform a variety of molecular separations in bulk liquids. The separations are 100% reversible and may performed at room temperature with zero to low amounts of added energy, depending on the separation. This is possible because when the material is removed from the bulk liquid mixture, the sorbed molecules will desorb either spontaneously or with heating at less than 50 oC, often within minutes. The separated species may therefore easily be condensed and recovered in the liquid phase for use, re-use, or disposal. The material has been shown to selectively sorb from bulk liquid mixtures: linear alcohols from branched alcohols; short chain alcohols from long chain alcohols; alcohols from water. The material has also proved an effective (reversible) sorbent for tetrahydrofuran (THF), amines, and cyclohexane. This new class of material may have application in petro-chemical industrial manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and industrial effluent stream remediation. For further information, please respond by mail or fax to Alane Dulski no later than March 13, 2002, at: Sandia National Laboratories, MS 1380, P.O. Box 5800, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87185-1380, Fax: +1 (555) 000-0000. Please indicate the date and title of this Federal Business Opportunities notice in your response.
