AI Contract Overview

Fermilab is entering into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) focused on advancing electropolishing techniques for single cell niobium superconducting radio frequency (SCRF) cavities. The objective is to establish the capability to perform electropolishing research and development specifically tailored to these cavities, which are integral components in particle accelerator technology. This effort aims to generate the technical data and insights required to determine the optimal cavity processing methods for the International Linear Collider (ILC), a major scientific project. As part of this initiative, a specialized single cell electropolishing apparatus (SCEPA) is being constructed to support the R&D activities outlined in the agreement. The long-term goal is to facilitate the transition of these optimized electropolishing processes to industrial-scale production. Key contacts for the agreement include senior procurement administrators Mike R. Yeoward and Ron A. Evans, who can provide further details on the project. The work under this CRADA falls within the manufacturing sector, specifically related to metal forming and machining equipment.

Full Description

Fermilab intends to establish a Cooperative Research andDevelopment Agreement (CRADA) in the field of electropolishing (EP) of niobium superconducting cavities. The main purpose of this CRADA is to develop the ability to conduct EP R&D on single cell superconducting radio frequency (SCRF) niobium cavities. This development will facilitate the acquisition of information needed to define the International Linear Collider (ILC) cavity processing method and will eventually lead to the industrialization of this process. A single cell electropolishing apparatus (SCEPA) is currently being built for use in this CRADA.
