Adeline Street Quick Build

The City of Berkeley is planning a quick-build improvement project on Adeline Street aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility for nonmotorized and transit users in an equity priority community. The project involves replacing one travel lane in each direction with temporary, quickly installed infrastructure including class II and IV bicycle facilities, striped lanes, three pedestrian refuge islands, and two bus boarding islands constructed using paint and doweled-in concrete. These measures are designed to create a more connected and safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians, linking to nearby cycle tracks and improving access to transit along a corridor known for high injury rates. The use of temporary materials allows for rapid deployment and real-time evaluation of the changes. Data will be collected before and after implementation to assess the impact of the interventions on safety, traffic flow, and user behavior. Insights gathered from this pilot phase will directly inform future long-term capital improvements to the corridor. The project is part of a broader strategy to prioritize active transportation and equitable mobility outcomes in communities disproportionately affected by unsafe street conditions.
