Adult Companion Services

The Newport News Department of Human Services (NNDHS) is committed to supporting older adults and adults with disabilities by providing community-based services that promote independence and allow individuals to remain safely in their homes for as long as possible. The Companion Services Program has been an important component of this effort by helping eligible residents maintain their health, safety, and quality of life while reducing the need for institutional care. The program serves adults 18 years of age and older with disabilities and adults 60 years of age and older who require assistance to continue living independently in the community. Through early intervention and ongoing support, the program helps prevent deterioration in functioning, reduces the likelihood of crisis situations or Adult Protective Services involvement, and supports the City's commitment to providing services in the least restrictive environment. Companion Services are funded through a combination of federal, state, and local resources, including the Virginia Department of Social Services Social Services Block Grant. The Department currently serves approximately 35 participants, with service needs varying throughout the year based on referrals, assessments, and individual circumstances. To ensure continuity of services and maintain the capacity to meet community needs, the City is seeking qualified providers to continue delivering these essential services to eligible residents.
