AI Contract Overview
The Department of Veterans Affairs Network Contracting Office 6 intends to award a sole source contract to Illumina Inc. for annual preventative maintenance and support services for the NextSeq 2000 Next Generation Sequencer at the Durham VA Medical Center. This action supports the VA SeqCURE program, an enterprise initiative launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to conduct SARS-CoV-2 variant sequencing and monitor emerging infectious diseases affecting veterans. Over 6,000 specimens have already been sequenced using this instrument, which was purchased with VA SeqCURE funds and is essential for maintaining research accuracy, precision, and reproducibility. The Durham VA lacks internal capacity to perform the required maintenance, and Illumina is the only provider capable of supporting the proprietary NextSeq 2000 system. The contract will run from September 5, 2026, to September 4, 2027, with four one-year option periods available. The procurement is being conducted under FAR 6.103-1(b) and FAR 12.102(a), restricting competition to a single source due to the unique nature of the equipment and service requirements. The North American Industry Classification System code for this procurement is 811210. The government has opened a 14-day window for public feedback until July 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. EST, during which other vendors may submit written documentation demonstrating their ability to meet the technical requirements, though the agency retains full discretion to proceed with sole source award regardless of submissions. All inquiries must be submitted via email to Krisanne.Dernago@va.gov, with no telephone requests accepted.
