The US Forest Service, through the Region 10 Acquisition Management office, is preparing to solicit bids for the reconditioning and/or rerouting of the Deweyville Trail located on Prince of Wales Island within the Tongass National Forest. The trail, approximately 0.16 miles long and accessible by road, requires improvements to meet National Forest System Class 3 or 4 trail standards. The project involves construction elements such as gravel-tread trails contained by log or timber retainers, Yellow Cedar steps for access, potential kayak slides, and replacement of puncheon tread with turnpike or boardwalk options to ensure proper drainage and trail consistency. The reroute portion includes constructing roughly 200 feet of new trail and a 40-foot footbridge, with an emphasis on eliminating sharp turns and maintaining an average slope not exceeding 5%. Work is projected to begin in June 2020 and conclude by September 2021, with an estimated project budget ranging between $100,000 and $250,000. However, funding is not presently secured, and contract award will only proceed once funds become available. The solicitation will likely feature one base item and one or two optional items, with detailed requirements finalized in the solicitation documents expected to be released within 45 days of the pre-solicitation date. Trail would be sloped to not exceed an average of 5%. Fill rock will be used to level trail (rock specifications pending final design). Rerouting of the trail will require new trail construction and construction of a 40ft footbridge. Reroute is estimated to be approximately 200ft in length.
