This effort seeks to expand the test kit production capacity of U.S. COVID-19 testing through the use of U.S. manufactured, high throughput, widely distributed molecular lab based testing machines that can be completed by December 2020 and provide an enduring capability post COVID-19 crisis. A decision to issue a sole source contract to Hologic, Inc. resulted based on the urgent requirements of responding to the national health emergency and their distribution and performance capabilities compared to other U.S. manufacturers of COVID-19 tests, testing materials, and associated machines. This requirement is using an Urgent and Compelling J&A which began the approval process on 09 July 2020. The contract was awarded on 25 July 2020.
