The U.S. Army Research, Engineering and Development Command, Natick Contracting Division, plans to negotiate and award a sole source purchase order to Texas A&M University for the testing and evaluation of ballistic fibers used in Interceptor Body Armor. This contract aims to develop an effective plan to assess the service life of key fibers such as Zylon, Kevlar KM2, M-5, and Armos under specific environmental conditions, particularly focusing on isothermal temperature thresholds at 100% relative humidity. The goal is to identify when these fibers permanently swell and thereby accelerate acid-catalyzed ballistic degradation, providing critical data for the Army’s material durability and protection capabilities. The effort falls under the authority of FAR 6.302-1 and is administered by the Soldier System Center in Natick, Massachusetts. The announcement for this acquisition expires on December 27, 2004, and all inquiries can be directed to Mr. Greg Wilson at the Natick Contracting Division. This contract is categorized under NAICS code 339999 and is part of the Department of Defense's ongoing initiative to ensure the reliability and performance of soldier protective equipment through rigorous scientific evaluation.
