Big Bend Project

The Fall River Resource Conservation Demonstration will lead fuel reduction efforts in the Big Bend area of California, targeting wildfire risks to homes, communities, critical infrastructure, and both public and private lands within the wildland-urban interface. The project focuses on a predominately Sierran Mixed Conifer forest, where vegetation such as woody brush, small diameter downed fuels, and understory trees will be treated to lower fire intensity and spread. A variety of methods will be employed including prescribed herbivory, hand and mechanical piling, chipping, controlled burning of piles and broadcast, mastication, lop and scatter, biomass thinning, and targeted herbicide application to achieve ecological resilience while minimizing environmental impact. All work will be carried out with strict attention to protecting natural, cultural, and environmental resources alongside fire hazard reduction. The project is located in the 96011 zip code area of California and is managed by the Fall River RCD, with Sharmie Stevenson serving as the Executive Director and primary point of contact.
