Award an SAES for the design of new HVAC system. The Bowling Alley Building 3560 was designed as a smoking facility which by code required a significant amount of outside air which was exhausted down the lanes. The existing ductwork is insulated on the inside and the insulation is falling off restricting the airflow. There is no room above the ceiling to install a return air duct and get it to the mechanical room. Even with replacing the existing ductwork in-kind, there is no way that the system can be made to work with a single return at one side. The problems for the snack bar are similar. Heating and cooling is provided by a water source modular heat pump chiller which is relatively new. There are two air handling units located in the mechanical room, one for the bowling alley and one for the snack bar. Shutting down the bowling alley or the snack bar for an extended period is out of the question so the HVAC system replacement must be phased. Cutting holes of sufficient size for roof top units is not an option due to the construction of the building.
