Project entailed the replacement of a culvert near the Blue Slide Day Use Area on Mattole Road in Humboldt Redwood State Park to alleviate and prevent current and future erosion issues to ensure the continued use of Mattole Road for park staff, visitors, and nearby community residents. Work included:
Use an excavator to relocate K-rail sections to outside the excavation area;
Excavate a trench down to the existing culvert, expose it, and remove the old pipe and dispose of it at a scrap metal facility;
Backfill and compact any sink holes or washed-out areas;
Install a new pipe with the same dimensions into the existing trench, matching the existing inlet and outlet configuration;
Place appropriately sized rock slope protection at the culvert inlet to protect fill from saturation and scour and to direct flow into the culvert;
Fill and compact, in 6-inch lifts, with a mechanical compactor until the trench is refilled; and
Repave and reinstall K-rails.
