Bridge Preventative Maintenance Program

The County of Riverside Transportation Department is proposing to implement maintenance improvements at 19 bridge locations within the County. The proposed project includes 19 bridge locations that are within or adjacent to the cities of Riverside, Corona, San Jacinto, Palm Desert, Beaumont, Perris, and Murrieta and within portions of unincorporated Riverside County including the communities of Thermal, Oasis, and Desert Center. The proposed bridge preventative maintenance work is based on the structural ratings and work recommendation identified in the Caltrans Bridge Inspection Reports (BIRs), and findings and reconciliation of qualified work from various field reviews. The proposed bridge preventative maintenance work, in general, consists of one or a combination of the following activities at each bridge: • Backfill erosion on abutment embankment slopes and wingwalls. • Apply a polyester concrete overlay and/or methacrylate seal on the bridge deck to treat concrete cracks. • Supplement deteriorated timber elements including girders and columns. • Replace deteriorated timber railings. • Replace expansion joint seals. • Epoxy-inject cracks on abutment walls, pier walls, and concrete slopes. • Repair cracked bridge approaches. • Repair concrete spalls on bridge elements. The bridge preventative maintenance work is divided into three categories as follows: • Category A: Preventative maintenance work that involves some level of ground disturbance. The work in this category includes backfill, excavation, and cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) concrete piling by using construction equipment in the channel bed or below the bridge. Four bridges are in this category. • Category B: Preventative maintenance work that requires no equipment or ground disturbance in the channel or below the bridge. The work will include walking under the bridge and the use of small, portable pumps or equipment that will be placed entirely outside of any areas that are identified as sensitive, such as drainages. No driving or other types of ground-disturbing activities would occur. Six bridges are in this category. • Category C: Preventative maintenance work that will be done entirely on the bridge deck or paved road approaches. No ground disturbance would occur. Nine bridges are in this category. No additional right of way or temporary construction easements will be required to implement the proposed maintenance improvements.
