Schoharie County is initiating a project to deploy a new fiber optic network aimed at serving the most rural and hard-to-reach unserved areas within the county. The project involves constructing approximately 323.5 miles of both aerial and buried fiber optic lines to connect 499 unserved locations, with the potential to reach over 4,000 sites. Key infrastructure components include the installation of three new telecom shelters, upgrades to eight existing shelters, and connections to the county’s central office, along with the deployment of access electronics, transport electronics, and miscellaneous equipment. Separate contracts will handle telecom shelter site construction and power generator installations. The project is scheduled to commence in late September 2025 and conclude by November 2026. Interested contractors are invited to review the bid packet and participate in a pre-bid meeting, with responses due by July 21, 2025. Questions regarding the project are due by July 7, 2025, with answers provided by July 16, 2025. The contract does not set MWBE, service-disabled veteran-owned, or disadvantaged-owned subcontracting goals. The project is managed by the Schoharie County Rural Preservation Corporation and is valued between $20 million and $50 million. The primary contact for the project is Brian Nordtvedt, President and Project Engineer at Farr Technologies. This initiative represents a significant effort to improve broadband access in underserved rural communities within New York State.
