AI Contract Overview

The contract seeks qualified internet service providers and network owners to participate in a two-phase process aimed at developing a comprehensive broadband infrastructure for Athens-Clarke County. In the first phase, applicants must submit a qualifications package, and those deemed qualified will be invited to submit a detailed proposal in the second phase. The primary goal is to design, construct, and implement a middle-mile backbone system that enhances connectivity across the county. The backbone will consist of at least 864 fibers of fiber optic cable, designed to provide direct service to key county facilities such as fire stations, police stations, and pollution control centers. Additionally, the system will support connectivity for current and future cell towers, with spare dark fibers available for lease or future technological expansion. The project emphasizes collaboration rather than competition, as the Athens-Clarke County government does not intend to operate or compete in broadband service provision. Instead, it aims to partner with a network owner or internet service provider to ensure universal connectivity throughout the county. The contract is valued between 5 million and 20 million dollars, with a response deadline of April 17, 2025. The initiative underscores the importance of expanding broadband infrastructure to support public safety, government operations, and future technological needs within the region. More details and the application process can be accessed through the official Athens-Clarke County procurement website.
