Calwa Elementary School Reconstruction

The Fresno Unified School District is implementing the Calwa Elementary School Reconstruction project using Measure H bond funds to modernize campus facilities that no longer meet current building, accessibility, and educational standards. The project involves the selective demolition and reconstruction of campus buildings, including a new Multipurpose Room, Administration Office, and Early Learning Building, alongside interior renovations of seven existing buildings totaling approximately 28,300 square feet. Site improvements include new student and staff parking lots, bus drop-off loops, and redeveloped play areas. To maintain instruction during construction, the project will utilize a phased approach and interim facilities, including a prefabricated multipurpose room and kitchen. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2028 and conclude in August 2030. The project is subject to strict compliance with Title 24 of the California Building Standards Code and requires certification from the Division of State Architects. Environmental and safety requirements are a primary focus, necessitating a site-specific Health and Safety Plan, adherence to the California Construction General Permit, and the use of certified contractors for asbestos abatement. Special attention is required for historical preservation, specifically regarding the demolition of the historic red brick MPR and the protection of materials in Buildings C, D, and J. The project will implement a single point of entry layout based on contemporary school safety design principles to ensure a secure environment for students and staff.
