Surface preparation to be one or more of the following deemed most appropriate for each area depending on existing conditions of each area and site protection able to be employed: SSPC = The Society for Protective Coatings or AMPP = The Association for Materials Protection and Performance SP 1 (Solvent Cleaning): Removes visible oil, grease, dirt, soil, drawing compounds, and other contaminants using solvents, steam, or emulsifying agents. This is the first step in surface preparation. SSPC-SP 6 / NACE 3 (Commercial Blast Cleaning): Removes all visible rust, mill scale, and old coatings, with staining limited to no more than 33% of each unit area. SSPC-SP 10 / NACE 2 (Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning): Provides a higher degree of cleaning, with staining limited to no more than 5% of each unit area. This is often the requirement for immersion service or other severe conditions. SSPC-SP 11 (Power-Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal): Achieves a clean, bare-metal surface with power tools, though some rust may remain at the bottom of pits. This is suitable for less critical exposures where blasting is impractical. Environmental conditions must meet these requirements. Temperature: Surface and ambient temperatures must be within the manufacturer's specified range (e.g., 40–100°F). Dew Point: The surface temperature must be at least 5°F above the dew point to prevent condensation, Relative Humidity: Humidity is typically specified to be below 85%. Coating application as follows. The protective coating is applied in layers, following the manufacturer's specific instructions for mixing, thinning, and application. A typical system involves a primer and one or more finish coats. Primer coating, corrosion-resistant including zinc-rich primers. Application: Must be applied evenly via brush, roller, or spray, with the specified dry film thickness as recommended by manufacturer. Intermediate/tie coat (tbd if needed) to promote adhesion between the primer and the topcoat. Must be chemically compatible with both the primer and the topcoat. Finish/topcoat as follows. Provide the final matching finish paint including two-component, high-build aliphatic polyurethanes or specialized coating containing stainless steel flakes. Multiple coats may be required to achieve optimal film thickness and ensure a truly impervious barrier. Prior to acceptance the following conditions must be met. Visual inspection: A certified inspector must verify that surface preparation meets the specified standard (e.g., SSPC-VIS 1). Adhesion testing: Portable pull-off adhesion tests (e.g., ASTM D4541) are performed to verify the bond strength of the coating. Film thickness: The DFT of each coat is measured using a Type 2 magnetic gauge, calibrated according to SSPC-PA 2. Curing: The inspector verifies that the coating is properly cured according to the manufacturer's specifications before applying subsequent coats. All refinishing activities must comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations to ensure worker safety. Key safety measures; Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Appropriate PPE must be worn, especially during surface preparation with abrasive blasting or when handling hazardous chemicals. Ventilation: Well-ventilated areas are required when working with paints and chemicals, as fumes can be hazardous. Hazardous materials: Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals must be consulted, and chemical-soaked rags must be properly disposed of. Provide protection for walkways and road overpass, single lane closure must meet DOT requirements. A Structural Engineer evaluation and signed sealed recombination is the responsibility and cost the bidder who is awarded. Please include this cost as line item in your bid breakdown. Area take offs of total square footage of work surfaces must be NOTED IN YOU BID and an overall SF Unit price provided, otherwise you bid will be disqualified. All finish / topcoat paints must be field applied in a prepared are adjacent to an existing area for final approval paint to painting topcoat.
