Centennial High School Modernization Project

The Compton Unified School District is undertaking the Centennial High School Modernization Project in Compton, California, to redevelop the existing campus and improve educational, athletic, and support facilities. The project involves the demolition of existing permanent and portable buildings and the construction of a new administration building, academic building, performing arts center, gymnasium, aquatic center, dining and career technical education building, and field house. Additionally, the project includes replacement athletic facilities, new parking lots, and comprehensive improvements to landscaping, circulation, utilities, accessibility, and stormwater management. Construction is planned to occur in phases over approximately four years, beginning in August 2026 and concluding in August 2030. The project has undergone extensive environmental and technical review, including a Mitigated Negative Declaration under CEQA, a geotechnical investigation addressing seismic and liquefaction hazards, and a hydrology report for stormwater management. Key compliance requirements include adherence to the California Building Code, ASCE 7-16 seismic standards, and ADA-compliant curb ramp installations. Environmental safeguards are mandated for dust control, the handling of contaminated soils, and the use of formaldehyde-compliant building products and high-efficiency MERV 13 air filters. The project also includes detailed analyses of air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, noise, vibration, and traffic impacts to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding community.
