The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plans to award a sole source firm fixed price contract to Columbia University to conduct laboratory analyses and collaborative research focused on the characterization and quantification of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in human blood. The contract will support efforts to validate extraction and measurement protocols and evaluate variability in MNP detection using advanced analytical instruments. This collaboration aims to combine the CDC's laboratory expertise with Columbia University's specialized analytical capabilities to develop reliable measurement methods and enhance scientific understanding of MNP presence in biological matrices. The performance period for this contract is expected to run from September 15, 2026, through September 14, 2028. The contract will be awarded under a sole source procurement authority, whereby the government intends to solicit and negotiate exclusively with Columbia University, although interested parties may express their capability to perform the work or submit proposals prior to the specified deadline. Responses must be submitted by June 19, 2026, and will be considered only to decide whether a competitive procurement is warranted; however, the government retains full discretion over whether to pursue competition. The project falls under NAICS code 541380 and will be conducted primarily in Atlanta, Georgia, with the CDC’s Office of Acquisition Services serving as the contracting office.
