Cohasset Area Reforestation and Oak Restoration Program

The Cohasset Area Reforestation and Oak Restoration Program is a funded initiative by the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and implemented by the Butte County Fire Safe Council and Butte County Resource Conservation District. The program focuses on the restoration of 6,372 acres in Cohasset, California, which were severely impacted by the 2024 Park Fire. The primary objectives are to accelerate forest recovery, reduce future wildfire risks to local communities, and increase ecosystem resilience to changing climate conditions. Key activities include planting California native tree seeds and seedlings adapted for the next 50 years, leader-training hardwood resprouts to support woodland development, and processing pruned materials through chipping, broadcasting, lopping, scattering, or piling and burning. The program adheres to strict environmental and regulatory standards, including compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), as evidenced by the Final Negative Declaration and Notice of Determination. Site preparation may involve herbicide application, which must be performed by licensed professionals following the guidance of a California-licensed Pest Control Advisor and requires permits from the Butte County Agricultural Commissioner and notification to the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board. Additionally, pile burning requires BCAQMD and potentially CAL FIRE permits and is strictly prohibited during red flag conditions. The project also includes protocols for the discovery of human remains in accordance with the California Health and Safety Code.
