The purpose of this contract is to arrange for the production of tree seedling stock for a planned 2023 summer tree plant for the Petawawa Research Forest, Chalk River, Ontario. White pine seeds require a 90 day stratification prior to sowing and therefore will need to occur during the winter of 2022/2023. (Stratification is the process required to break the seed’s dormancy before they can germinate.)
These tree seedlings are required to fulfil the obligations set out in PRF’s Forest Management Plan to ensure the successful renewal of forest stands to an appropriate species after harvest and to provide seedlings for the Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) Research project. A total of 243,828 seedlings (160,128 for ASCC, (includes 1,500 ASCC TRANSX) and 83,700 for PRF) will be planted in the late summer of 2023.
