Full Description

Planned work is for hazard fuels reduction on the Beartooth Ranger District of the Custer National Forest. The 2014 Horseman Flats/Benbow Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project is a continuation of the ranger district's hazard fuels program. The Horseman Flats units are located west of Nye, Montana and North West of the Stillwater Mine Complex. The Benbow units are west of Red Lodge, Montana and southwest of Dean, Montana. The purpose of this project is to provide wildfire management more suppression options to reduce the possibility of future wildfires from spreading beyond National Forest System lands. This project is intended to reduce hazardous fuel loading, thin mixed coniferous stands, and provide long-term effectiveness of fuels treatments by reducing fire intensities. Total acres to be treated under all items is 188.6 acres. This is a mechanical (tracked or wheel) operation: can be feller buncher and/or excavator and/or forwarder and/or skidder. Contractor can cut trees and slash with hand chainsaw if preferred but machines are needed to skid logs, deck logs and pile slash. The project is located on the Beartooth Ranger District on the Custer National Forest. Horseman Flats units are located near Nye, MT: T5S, R15E, portions of sections 7,8,9,10,15,16, 21 and FS Road 2848. Benbow units are approximately 25 miles west of Red Lodge, MT and 2-3 miles southwest of Dean, MT: T5S, R16E, Sections 15, 16, 21, 22. It is anticipated the solicitation and all materials will be posted to FBO by 3/31/14.
