Damage repair resulted from an Atmospheric River Strom.(EA 1R640)

This emergency repair project, initiated by Caltrans District 8, addresses critical infrastructure damage on State Route 330 near Running Springs in San Bernardino County. The damage was caused by an Atmospheric River storm that triggered heavy precipitation, flooding, and debris flows within the Line Fire burn scar. These events resulted in sediment-filled drainage basins that overwhelmed existing systems, covered roadways with debris, and damaged essential safety features including debris barriers, guardrails, cable railings, and roadway signs. Furthermore, the storm caused significant erosion and undermined portions of the roadway embankments, rendering the section of SR-330 between Highland Avenue and Live Oak Drive unsafe for travel and closed to the public. The scope of work focuses on the minor repair and maintenance of existing facilities to restore safe passage. Key tasks include remediating eroded embankments, clearing sediment from drainage systems, and replacing damaged roadside hardware. Because the project involves only the repair of existing infrastructure without any expansion of use, it has been granted a Notice of Exemption under CEQA Class 1(C). The project is managed by Caltrans District 8, with administrative oversight provided by the Senior Environmental Planner. The performance area is specifically located between mile posts 29.6 and 43.9 within San Bernardino County.
