The City of San Diego has secured federal funding through the FHWA Highway Bridge Program, administered via Caltrans, to rehabilitate the structurally deficient Fairmount Avenue bridges located southeast of Mission Valley. These bridges, on Fairmount Avenue at Aldine Drive, are critical urban arterial routes serving Kensington, Talmadge, Normal Heights, and City Heights communities. The project involves widening the existing bridges with precast concrete box girders to accommodate two 12-foot lanes, 8-foot outer shoulders, 4-foot inner shoulders, and a barrier-separated 6-foot sidewalk, along with ADA upgrades and additional sidewalk extensions along Aldine Drive. The initial phase, including preliminary engineering, environmental, and geotechnical studies, has been completed, leading to the selection of final rehabilitation alternative 3A. The scope of work for the current phase encompasses preparing detailed environmental documents (CEQA and NEPA), final plans, specifications, and estimates for the approved alternative, as well as conducting any necessary environmental or technical studies. The contractor will also provide engineering support during the bidding, construction, and post-construction phases, including assistance with contract award, construction oversight, and the preparation of as-built documentation.
