Replacement of the two timber bridges on River Road over Huer Huero Creek is a priority for the County. Bridge 49C0052 is structurally deficient and has a sufficiency rating of 17.4, well below the Caltrans threshold of 50 to be considered for replacement. In recent years, the County has completed several repairs including deck methacrylate treatment, abutment repairs, and column/pier repairs. Even with these investments, the timber elements on Bridge 49C0052 will continue to degrade due to moisture and pests, particularly in the piles and exterior stringers. Replacement, rather than rehabilitation, of this 73-year-old timber structure is the most cost-effective long-term solution. Bridge 49C0346 is 100 feet south of bridge 49C0052. Bridge 49C0346 is also structurally deficient and has a sufficiency rating of 32.7. Despite being rated for legal loads, traffic on bridge 49C0346 is restricted to one lane due to the bridge’s poor condition at the exterior sides of the bridge. These bridges are both in need of replacement and because both bridges will likely need widening to meet modern standards, combining these bridges into a single project will make it easier to conform the new geometry of each bridge while also being economically and logistically prudent.
