1. Background
Transport Canada (TC) Aircraft Services Directorate (ASD) is responsible for the provision of aviation services in support of TC operations as well as those of other federal departments and agencies. ASD is a TC regulated, pan-national, air operator that is similar to a small airline or air charter service that provides aviation operations and maintenance services to multiple federal government departments. ASD is the largest government service provider of civil aircraft services.
Operating under the Canadian Aviation Regulations as a Commercial Air Operator, we provide services to TC’s Civil Aviation Directorate, the Marine Safety and Security (MSS) Program, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans/Canadian Coast Guard (DFO/CCG), the Department of National Defence (DND), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and other government departments and agencies. ASD operates both fixed and rotary wing aircraft for the Government of Canada and its clients.
2. Background
ASD has a requirement to meet TC Airworthiness Directive (AD) CF-2024-14 on its Seven (7) Beechcraft King Air C-90A aircraft. This AD is related to interference caused in an aircraft’s Radio Altimeter System caused by ground based cellular systems operating in the 5G spectrum. Complete details can be found in the AD at; https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/2/awd-cn/documents/CF-2024-14-E.PDF
Referencing Part I, the C-90A is a Non-Radio Altimeter Tolerant Aeroplane per 3.2(ii).
Each aircraft has one (1) Collins ALT-55B (P/N 622-2855-011) Rad Alt system installed. They were installed iaw STC's C-LSA 14-160/D, O-LSA19-077/D, C-LSA21-001/D.
ASD requires a TCCA approved data package to replace the existing Rad Alt with a Collins ALT-1000+ Rad Alt transceiver (XCVR), P/N 822-1939-055. The new Rad Alt must be Form, Fit and Function equivalent to the existing XCVR. This means replacing the XCVR only and retaining/reusing all other existing parts and electrical interconnects.
End state is that all aircraft meet the definition of Radio Tolerant Aeroplane per 3.2(iii).
